My Encounter With A Spitting Cobra
This all happened quite a long time ago so hope I can remember it all correctly.
I was living on a small holding which was about 5 acres in size just outside a small town called Luanshya in Zambia, which is a country in Africa.
It was a Saturday Afternoon about 3 or 4 o'clock and we were all sitting and watching T.V (by all I mean my husband and my two sons and myself) when one of our workers came to the window and started calling out Madam, Madam, come quick and running off he seemed in a right panic,
So I stood up muttering what the heck is wrong now as I wanted to relax.
As he had ran off towards the side of the house, which is where the kitchen and back door were, I walked through to the kitchen muttering all the time about being disturbed.
The back door was closed and as I walked towards it and put my hand out to open the door I don't know what made me look downwards (and I was glad I did) I suddenly saw in front of me this frightful sight of a cobra with its hood open it seemed to be right by my waist if not higher and was looking at me eye to eye.
At this point I can truthfully say I am not very clear of what exactly happened next, All I can remember is those eyes looking right at me, I remember screaming but how I managed to jump away and do a twist in mid-air so as to be facing away from the back door and running into the dinning room, I just do not now?.
I do remember shouting to my Husband that there was a snake in the kitchen and to bring something to seal the bottom of the dinning room door, which I had closed after running through it. He brought some towels and can’t remember what else, as I had this weird idea that the snake was going to chase me and come under the door like it had the Back Door. To this day I just can’t figure out how it had fitted under the back door anyway as it definitely was not a small snake.
After sealing the door my husband went and got his pellet gun I staid with the children and tried to keep them calm but I was shaking so much don’t think I managed that very well. My husband went out the front door and walked around the house to the back and looked in the kitchen window, he was just in time to see the snake go behind the fridge which was right opposite the back door .
At all the screaming and yelling going on our brave worker who had run off came back when he saw my Husband there and our other workers also came. So while my husband very carefully opened the back door they kept a look out through the window. As he opened the door the snake must of suddenly decided it wanted out of there and seeing my husband blocking its way it reared up and started spitting luckily my husband had put on a pair of sunglasses (safest thing to do when a cobra is about) so the glasses got the worst of it but some did get on the side of his face, a second lot struck the sleeve of his shirt. The snake then made a dash for the outside and wisely nobody stood in its way.
My husband had managed to get a shot off but it made no difference. The snake made a dash for our water tank which was on top of this large ant hill and went straight up the side of it. Our workers were all yelling and chasing it they then started hitting it with sticks, at last it fell to the ground and my Husband finished it off with the pellet gun. We then measured it and it was 8ft (Not Small).
The body we gave to the worker who had called us in first place and I believe he sold it on to a witch doctor who the locals still believed in and still do I’m sure. When I asked him why he didn’t call snake or hadn’t he actually seen it entering the house. He actually told us that yes he had seen the snake come out of the Ant Hill which was near the back door and start to slide under the door, but he didn’t think to warn us as it just didn’t register in his mind he, thought we would be able to know by the way he was shouting (DOH).
(For those of you thinking why did we have to kill it well the reason was with all the people living near us it was just to dangerous to leave it free as next time it could be a child who came eye to eye with it)
